Kreidler winter storage: making it through the season

Most damage to a classic moped happens while it stands still, not while it is ridden. Half an hour of work in November saves you an afternoon of spannering in March.

Moisture is the main enemy

A cold, damp shed with a tarpaulin over the bike is the worst thing you can do. Moisture condenses under that sheet and cannot escape, and it attacks chrome, paint and cylinder.

Better: a dry space, and if it needs a cover, a breathable one — not plastic.

Fuel: full or empty

Opinions differ. In practice:

Preserving the engine

Take out the spark plug, squirt some two-stroke oil into the cylinder and turn the engine over a few times so the oil spreads. Refit the plug. The cylinder wall then does not stand dry.

Tyres and suspension

Put the machine on its stand so the tyres carry no weight. If it has to sit on its tyres, inflate them a little above normal to avoid flat spots.

Battery

If you have a battery, remove it and store it somewhere dry above freezing. Top up the charge every couple of months. A battery that spends winter flat is dead by spring.

Protection

A thin film of wax or preservative oil on chrome and bare metal. Do not forget the underside: mudguards and stands rust from below.

Do you ride through winter? Rinse off the road salt after every ride and dry the machine. Salt is the quickest way to lose your chrome.

Spring

Before you ride in March: check tyre pressures, brakes, cables and fasteners. And check that mice have not moved into your air filter — it sounds like a joke, but it happens more often than you would think.
