Working on a Kreidler: which tools you actually need

You need surprisingly little to work on a Kreidler. But a few special tools are essential, and that is exactly where things go wrong when people improvise.

The basics

The special tools

This is what really matters. Three things cannot be improvised:

Flywheel puller. The flywheel sits on a taper and only comes off with a puller. Levering with screwdrivers bends the crankshaft — a mistake that costs hundreds. Pullers with the correct thread for Kreidler are available.

Crankcase splitter. For opening the engine without damaging the sealing face. Lever a screwdriver between the case halves and you will never get the engine oil-tight again.

Compression tester. Not strictly necessary, but it tells you in ten minutes whether your top end is still healthy.

Useful, not essential

What not to do

An impact wrench on the flywheel nut. You damage the crankshaft bearings.

Water-pump pliers on chrome. Permanent damage in a single movement.

A slightly undersized spanner "that just fits". The quickest route to a rounded bolt head, and a rounded head costs you an hour.

Build the kit in the right order

Start with the basic set and the flywheel puller. That covers servicing, setting the ignition and fixing most faults. Buy the case splitter and bearing pullers only when you actually open the engine — by then you will know exactly which sizes you need.
