What is your Kreidler worth? How to work out its value

Whether you are buying, selling or insuring, it helps to know what a Kreidler is worth and why. Prices vary enormously, and that comes down to a handful of factors.

Originality counts most

A machine with its original engine, original colour and original parts is worth more than a technically identical one assembled from whatever was available. Collectors pay for matching numbers: frame and engine numbers that belong together and match the year.

A tidy, original machine with honest wear is often worth more than a fully restored one finished in a way that is not correct.

Completeness

Missing parts are expensive. Think of the correct exhaust, the original saddle, chain case, tool box, mirrors and the type decals. You rarely find all of them at once, and the hunt costs both time and money.

Model and rarity

The sporting versions such as the RS generally sit higher than the simpler models. Special versions and Van Veen machines have their own following. But note: rare is not automatically valuable — there has to be demand too.

Mechanical condition

What a buyer mainly wants to know:

Paperwork

A Kreidler with registration documents is worth considerably more than the same machine without. Without papers the buyer faces a registration process, and that pushes the price down — sometimes sharply.

Arriving at a figure

  1. Find comparable listings, and look at what actually sold, not at asking prices.
  2. Compare fairly: same model, same year, same condition, with or without papers.
  3. Deduct what still needs doing. A set of tyres, a rebuild or fresh chrome are real costs.
  4. Get a valuation if the machine is special or you want to insure it for an agreed value.

When selling

Good photographs in daylight, from every angle, including the less attractive spots. Stating honestly what is wrong earns more in the end than hiding it: buyers who feel misled either negotiate hard or walk away.
